Early History

Initial Users Group Meeting
  • January 31st, 2000 - Organized and sponsored by Hennepin County


    • Structured as an organizational forum to gather interest
    • 125 attendees (County, City, Private, Utility Co.)

  • Presentations by Hennepin County staff included:


    • Creation and use of the County’s parcel basemap
    • Discussion of the color digital orthophoto project
    • Using ArcView for route planning
    • Web applications

  • Breakout groups offered feedback on organizational structure, participation, expectations and opportunities for the Users Group.

Steering Commitee Planning
  • Group of volunteers met on April 19th, 2000 and May 5th, 2000 to discuss the organizational structure, activities and future direction of the Users Group
  • SIG Groups created to offer discussions on specific topics including


    • Data (Metadata, Formats)
    • Technical (Software/Hardware, Applications)
    • Redistricting (Short term topics)
    • Education (Demonstrations)

User Group Meetings
  • June 6th, 2000


    • Focused on what GIS is and how is it used
    • Presentations by Rowekamp, Intergraph and SEH
    • SIG discussions
  • July 11th, 2000


    • Update of Hennepin County’s progress in redistricting
    • SIG discussions
  • August 21st, 2000


    • Markhurd offered an in-depth look at the aerial survey process
    • Viewed GIS applications that use orthophotos
  • November 15th, 2000


    • GIS Day at the Ridgedale Library
    • Presentations, exhibits and demonstrations
Activities Suspended
  • One more Steering Committee meeting to discuss orthophotos


  • No other meetings until another group of volunteers started discussions a few months ago
